Caffeine Content of Tea
The caffeine content in tea changes considerably from things as simple as the type of tea you are consuming to as complex as the part of the leaves being used to make the blends.
There are many myths in regards to the caffeine content in tea, such as, white tea contains less caffeine than green tea, and black tea is the strongest tea. Read below to learn more about the caffeine your consuming in your daily cuppa!
The Varieties of Tea
1. Pu'er Tea
The amount of caffeine in pu'er tea can vary greatly due to the fermentation and aging process. The more aged the pu'er, the better the flavor—and the stronger the caffeine. Generally speaking, the raw production process yields less caffeine than the ripe process.
You can expect a black fermented pu'er to yield 60-100 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup, potentially making this the strongest tea. In contrast, green/young Pu'er tea yields 30-45 milligrams of caffeine per cup putting it closer to a cup of white tea. This is also the perfect tea for new moms to drink as it has less caffeine than a cup of coffee but is still nice and strong!
2. Black Tea
Black tea almost always ranges on the higher side of the caffeine spectrum sitting at 55-75mg per 8oz cup, followed by oolong tea. However, many factors determine caffeine levels in any individual cup. The more concentrated and longer the steep time, the more caffeine in the teacup.
And while most black teas, like our Darjeeling, (the Champagne of the tea world) and our Creamy Vanilla can be steeped multiple times, the caffeine content will lessen each time it’s steeped.
3. Oolong Tea
The caffeine content of oolong teas falls somewhere between green and black tea. A lightly oxidized oolong tea is more similar to a green tea and may have a lower caffeine content (around 40-50mg), while a highly oxidized oolong tea may have a higher caffeine content (50-75mg), similar to black tea.

4. Chai Tea
Chai tea is traditionally just black tea blended with spices, milk and sugar. With that being said, most chai teas fall around the 30-50mg mark for an 8oz cup depending upon which black tea is used in the blend.

5. Green Tea
In general, you can assume that an average 8-ounce cup of green tea will yield anywhere from 35 to 50 milligrams of caffeine, like our Pomegranate Rose and Strawberry Stunner Teas, with the exception of Matcha, which sits at around the 70mg mark.
The longer the steeping, the higher the caffeine. However, I don't advise steeping green teas for longer than 2 minutes until the second steep. While all of our teas can be steeped multiple times, the caffeine content will lessen each time.
6. White Tea
White teas are diverse and have a wide range of caffeine contents ranging from 15mg a cup to 70mg a cup. Most of our white teas have the least amount of caffeine. This is because the original Fujian white tea plant from China is lower in caffeine compared to other tea plants.
However, some studies have shown that white teas, such as Silver Needle, may contain as much caffeine as green or black teas depending upon where and how they were cultivated and processed. Georgia Peach, Sweet Strawberry Kiwi and Fountain of Youthful Berries are 3 light and bright teas!
7. Rooibos Tea / Herbal Tea
Rooibos and herbal teas are entirely caffeine-free—with the exception of blends that mix Rooibos with other teas, such as our Mate Tiramisu, which combines the South African brew with black tea and yerba mate. While coffee packs the most caffeine per cup, pu'er has the strongest caffeine kick among teas with roughly 80-100mg per cup followed by black tea. Following closely behind are Oolong, Green, and White Tea which has the least caffeine.However, many factors determine caffeine levels in any individual cup. The longer the steep time, the more caffeine in the teacup.

Blood Orange Black Tea
A true classic. Reminiscent of freshly squeezed oranges, let your mind escape with this wonderfully refreshing anytime tea.
Ingredients: Black tea, orange, apple, rose hips, rose petals, safflowers, natural and artificial orange flavor, natural and artificial vanilla flavor, natural and artificial lemon flavor.
Black Walnut Pu'er
Berry Truffle Pu'er
Our organic loose leaf Pu'er is blended and flavored with cranberries, elderberries and cacao. This tea may even lower your cholesterol. One of our favorite ways to enjoy this Pu'er is with a dash of milk (you can thank us later)!
A Match Made in Paradise! Green Tea meets Juicy mango and fresh guava for this tropical indulgence.
Ingredients: Green tea, mango pieces, apple, artificial flavoring, freeze-dried guava (guava puree, concentrated apple puree, concentrated apple juice), beetroot, pink cornflower.
Our Peach oolong is one of our fan favorites. This tea is made with Chinese oolong, peach pieces, lemon myrtle and flavor. You won't be disappointed whether iced or hot!
Fountain of Youthful Berries
Fountain of Youthful Berries is as beautiful to look at as it is delicious to sip! This complex tea blends organic Pai Mu Tan with pineapple, apples, cranberries, mango pieces, natural acai berry and blueberry flavors, rosehips, rose petals and hibiscus flowers.
Caramel Brûlée is so yummy you won’t even realize you're not eating dessert. This tea is a caramel flavored rooibos tea with organic cinnamon and organic anise.
This tea will take you right back to blueberry picking season. This bold and fruity blend has apples, blueberries, hibiscus, rosehips, beetroot, and black currant leaves. If you steep this tea for just 3 minutes it will come out nice and sweet.
